Air Canada: fare families and US preclearance
The thing travellers underestimate on Air Canada is not the fare structure, which is conventional enough. It is US preclearance, which changes how much time you need at the Canadian airport and how your onward connection works.

US preclearance, and why it changes your timings
At the major Canadian airports you clear US immigration and customs before you board, rather than on arrival. The consequences run in both directions:
- Allow much more time at the Canadian airport. You are completing a border formality before departure, and the queue can be long. The airline's minimum check-in time is not the number to plan around.
- Your arrival in the US is domestic. You walk off and out, or straight to a connecting gate. This makes onward US connections far easier than arriving from a non-preclearance airport.

The fare families
Air Canada uses a fare-family structure rather than a simple economy ladder. Broadly, Basic sits at the bottom with the tightest restrictions, then Standard, Flex, Comfort and Latitude progressively add baggage allowance, seat selection, change flexibility and refundability, before you reach Premium Economy and Business.
The useful mental model is that you are buying flexibility in increments. Work out how likely your plans are to change and buy accordingly, because moving up one family is usually cheaper than changing a ticket later.
Rouge, and knowing what you booked
Some leisure routes are operated by Air Canada Rouge, which has a different cabin configuration and onboard product from mainline Air Canada. It is shown at booking. If the cabin experience matters to you on a longer flight, check which one you are on before you commit.
