American Airlines: Basic Economy, seats and bag rules

American's Basic Economy does not behave like Delta's or United's, and two of its seat products are routinely confused with each other. Those two facts account for most of the surprises passengers report.

Basic Economy, the American version

American permits a full-size carry-on on Basic Economy, which puts it closer to Delta than to United on the question that matters most. What it takes away instead:

• No free advance seat selection — seats are assigned at check-in unless you pay.
• Last boarding group, which in practice means limited overhead space.
• No upgrades, whether paid or by status.
• Changes are heavily restricted or unavailable.

If you are travelling alone with hand baggage and fixed dates, it is a reasonable buy. With a family, the seat-selection charges usually erase the saving.

Main Cabin Extra and Preferred Seats are not the same thing

This trips people up constantly.

• Main Cabin Extra gives you additional legroom, and usually earlier boarding and complimentary drinks.
• Preferred Seats give you a better location in the standard cabin — further forward, or a window — but no extra legroom at all.

Both are paid options presented in similar places on the seat map. If you are paying for space, make sure you are buying the one that provides it.

The hub network, and one airport quirk

American's largest connecting points are Dallas/Fort Worth and Charlotte, with Philadelphia, Phoenix, Miami, Chicago and Washington National carrying substantial traffic. DFW and Charlotte are the two you are most likely to connect through domestically.

Washington National is worth a specific note: it operates under slot controls and a perimeter rule limiting most nonstop flights to a set distance, with a small number of exemptions. If a Washington routing looks odd, that is usually why, and DC-area travellers are often better served by Dulles for longer flights.
