JetBlue: fare bundles, legroom and Mint

JetBlue competes on the cabin rather than on price. Its standard economy legroom has historically been among the more generous in the US market, and its transcontinental premium product is a genuine business-class competitor rather than a wide recliner.

The fare bundles

  • Blue Basic — the restricted entry fare. Rules were relaxed after launch, but boarding position and change restrictions remain the trade.
  • Blue — standard economy.
  • Blue Plus / Blue Extra — bundles adding baggage and flexibility, worth pricing against the base fare plus the same items bought individually.
  • Mint — the premium cabin on transcontinental and selected long-haul routes, with lie-flat seating and, on some aircraft, private suites.

Even More Space is the extra-legroom economy product, sold separately from the fare bundle.

Why people choose it

Two things, consistently: seat pitch in standard economy, and free onboard wifi, which JetBlue has offered as standard for far longer than its competitors. On a five-hour transcontinental flight in economy those are not trivial differences.

Mint is the other reason. On the New York to Los Angeles and San Francisco routes in particular it changed what travellers expect from a domestic premium cabin.

Focus cities, not hubs

JetBlue operates a focus-city model centred on New York JFK, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and San Juan, rather than a classic hub-and-spoke network. Coverage is therefore deep on the east coast and the Caribbean and thinner elsewhere. It also means fewer alternative routings if something goes wrong on your day of travel.

When it is worth calling us instead of booking online

For a simple JetBlue Airways booking — one traveller, fixed dates, no complications — book it directly at www.jetblue.com and save yourself a service fee. We are useful when the booking is not simple:

  • Ten or more passengers, where the airline moves you to a group desk. See group flight booking.
  • A child travelling alone, which most carriers will not let you complete online. See unaccompanied minors.
  • A wheelchair, mobility aid, service animal or medical oxygen, which needs a service request filed against the reservation. See special assistance.
  • A name that does not match the travel document on an issued ticket. See name corrections.
  • Multi-city or open-jaw routing that a booking engine prices badly or refuses.
  • Rebooking after a cancellation, at the hour it happens. See last minute flights.

Common questions about JetBlue Airways

What is Blue Basic?

JetBlue's restricted entry fare. The rules were eased after launch, but boarding position and change restrictions remain the main trade-offs.

Is Mint worth it?

On a transcontinental route it is a lie-flat business product rather than a domestic first-class recliner, so the comparison is with other airlines' premium transcon cabins rather than with domestic first.

What is Even More Space?

JetBlue's extra-legroom economy seating, bought separately from the fare bundle. It also typically includes earlier boarding.

Does JetBlue fly everywhere in the US?

No. It runs a focus-city model with deep east coast and Caribbean coverage and thinner presence elsewhere, which also means fewer rerouting options during disruption.

Booking JetBlue Airways and it is not straightforward?

Group travel, a child flying alone, an assistance request or a name that needs correcting. Those are the calls worth making.
