One question dominates every United booking: does your fare include a bag in the overhead bin? On United the answer is genuinely not obvious, because it depends on the route and it is the strictest policy among the three large US carriers.

The Basic Economy carry-on trap
On most domestic United Basic Economy fares you get a personal item only. It must fit entirely under the seat in front, within roughly 17 x 10 x 9 inches. There is no full-size carry-on included, and a bag brought to the gate is checked there for a fee starting around $35 — on top of the fare.
On longer international Basic Economy fares — transatlantic, transpacific and South America — a full-size carry-on is included alongside the personal item.
So the same fare name means two different things depending on where you are flying. This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in US domestic travel, because the gate fee is charged when you have no alternative but to pay it.
Economy Plus is not Comfort+ and not Main Cabin Extra
United's extra-legroom product is Economy Plus. It is a distinct product from Delta's Comfort+ and American's Main Cabin Extra, with its own pricing and its own subscription option for frequent flyers. Comparing "the extra legroom seat" across the three carriers on price alone will mislead you, because what each includes differs.
Regional flying and what aircraft you actually get
A large share of United's domestic short-haul is operated by regional partners under the United Express banner, frequently on smaller regional jets. That matters more than it sounds:
- Overhead bins on small regional jets often cannot take a standard carry-on, so bags are gate-checked as a matter of routine rather than as a penalty.
- Cabin layout, seat width and onboard service differ from a mainline aircraft.
- The operating carrier may not be United itself, which can affect how disruption is handled.

United connects through Chicago O'Hare, Denver, Houston, Newark, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington Dulles, with Guam serving the Pacific.
