Delta Air Lines: fare classes, bags and change rules

Booking Delta is straightforward. Understanding what you actually bought is less so, because the cabin ladder runs from Basic Economy up to Delta One and the differences between adjacent rungs are not always obvious from the booking screen.

The fare ladder, in order

  • Basic Economy — the same seat, minus the flexibility. No changes on most tickets, no advance seat selection, last boarding group, no upgrades. A full-size carry-on is permitted, which is not true of every airline.
  • Main Cabin — standard economy: seat selection, changes permitted subject to fare difference, normal boarding.
  • Comfort+ — a separate booking class, not a paid upgrade to Main Cabin. More legroom, dedicated overhead space, earlier boarding.
  • Premium Select — a genuine premium economy cabin with a wider seat and more recline, on long-haul aircraft.
  • First on domestic routes, and Delta One on long-haul and premium transcontinental, which is a lie-flat business product.

The most common confusion is Comfort+ versus Main Cabin Extra-style seating on other airlines. Comfort+ is its own fare class on Delta, so it can be booked directly rather than only bought as an add-on.

Why your connection goes where it goes

Delta runs a strong hub structure, with Atlanta as the largest and Detroit, Minneapolis and Salt Lake City carrying much of the domestic connecting traffic, alongside New York and Los Angeles. If a routing looks geographically strange, it is usually because the itinerary is built through one of these.

Practically, hub connections tend to be reliable but can be long. Atlanta in particular is very large, and a connection that looks generous on paper can involve a significant walk or a train between concourses.

SkyMiles, briefly

SkyMiles is revenue-based: you earn on what you spend rather than how far you fly, and there is no published award chart, so redemption prices move with demand. Qualification for status is based on spending measures rather than distance.

The practical implication for an occasional flyer is that miles are best treated as a small rebate rather than a route to a free ticket.

When it is worth calling us instead of booking online

For a simple Delta Air Lines booking — one traveller, fixed dates, no complications — book it directly at www.delta.com and save yourself a service fee. We are useful when the booking is not simple:

  • Ten or more passengers, where the airline moves you to a group desk. See group flight booking.
  • A child travelling alone, which most carriers will not let you complete online. See unaccompanied minors.
  • A wheelchair, mobility aid, service animal or medical oxygen, which needs a service request filed against the reservation. See special assistance.
  • A name that does not match the travel document on an issued ticket. See name corrections.
  • Multi-city or open-jaw routing that a booking engine prices badly or refuses.
  • Rebooking after a cancellation, at the hour it happens. See last minute flights.

Common questions about Delta Air Lines

Can I take a carry-on with Delta Basic Economy?

Yes. Delta permits a full-size carry-on plus a personal item on Basic Economy, which is a meaningful difference from some competitors.

Can I change a Delta Basic Economy ticket?

Generally no, outside the 24-hour window. If there is any chance your plans move, the Main Cabin fare is worth the difference.

What is the difference between Comfort+ and Main Cabin?

Comfort+ is a separate fare class with additional legroom, dedicated overhead space and earlier boarding. It can be booked directly rather than only added later.

Why is my Delta flight routed through Atlanta?

Atlanta is Delta's largest hub and carries a very large share of its connecting traffic. Allow real time for the connection, since the airport is big.

Booking Delta Air Lines and it is not straightforward?

Group travel, a child flying alone, an assistance request or a name that needs correcting. Those are the calls worth making.
