Hawaiian Airlines: islands, airports and inter-island hops
The hard part of booking Hawaii is not the airline. It is deciding which island you are going to, which airport serves it, and whether you need an inter-island hop at all — because getting that wrong costs you a day of your holiday.

Which island, which airport
- Oahu (Honolulu, HNL) — the main gateway, most nonstop service from the mainland, and the usual connecting point for the other islands.
- Maui (Kahului, OGG) — substantial direct mainland service.
- Hawaii Island (Kona, KOA, and Hilo, ITO) — Kona serves the resort side, Hilo the wetter east. They are a long drive apart, so pick deliberately.
- Kauai (Lihue, LIH) — fewer mainland nonstops, so more likely to involve a connection.
The single most common planning error is flying into Honolulu for a holiday on another island without realising a second flight is required, and without leaving time for it.
How inter-island flying works
Inter-island hops are short — typically well under an hour — and run frequently. They are a different product from the mainland flights, with their own fare structure and baggage rules.
The important booking point: if your mainland flight and your inter-island hop are on separate tickets, a delay arriving means the hop is your problem, not the airline's. On a single ticket it is protected. On a day of travel that already involves five or six hours over the Pacific, that protection is worth having.
The Alaska integration
Hawaiian merged with Alaska in September 2024 and continues to fly under its own brand. Loyalty is now shared: HawaiianMiles was replaced by Atmos Rewards, with accounts converted from 1 October 2025. Which Hawaiian island airport should I fly into?
Fly into the island you are staying on wherever a nonstop exists. Honolulu is the main gateway but connecting through it to another island adds several hours.
Do I need a separate flight between islands?
Usually, unless there is a mainland nonstop to your island. Book it on the same ticket as the mainland flight so a delay is the airline's responsibility.
Are Hawaiian and Alaska the same airline?
