Lufthansa: fare types and connecting via Frankfurt or Munich

Lufthansa runs two large connecting hubs, Frankfurt and Munich, and which one your itinerary uses makes a genuine difference to how easy the travel day is.

Frankfurt or Munich

Both work, and they are not equivalent.

• Frankfurt is the larger and busier, with more onward connections. It is also where a tight connection is more likely to mean a long walk or a bus to a remote stand.
• Munich is generally the easier connection, with shorter distances, though it offers fewer onward options.

If both appear at a similar fare and you have a connection to make, Munich is usually the more comfortable choice.

Fare types and baggage

Economy is sold in tiers, with the entry fare typically excluding a checked bag and carrying the tightest change rules. Higher tiers add baggage, seat selection and flexibility, before Premium Economy, Business and First.

As with any long-haul entry fare, add a checked bag both ways before comparing against the next tier. The gap is frequently smaller than it first looks.

Codeshares: check who actually operates it

A flight sold under a Lufthansa number may be operated by a group or partner airline, with a different cabin, baggage rules and onboard product. The operating carrier is disclosed at booking, and it is worth reading if you chose the airline for the product rather than the schedule.
